On Monday 5 May, we had the great pleasure of going to see The Sailing Ship Nippon-Maru Fan Male Choir perform sea shanties in Yokohama. We were seated near the front this year. It was amazing to hear the beautiful range of their voices. It was like a wave of tones and skillful effects. Some of the sea shanties included: Sailing, Sailing, Sloop "John B", Shenandoah, Swansea Town, and one of our favorites, "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor?"

The performance was nicely presented in two sessions, the first was Weather Side (when the ship is exposed to wind) and the second was Lee Side (sheltered from the wind).  Weather Side consisted of sea shanties sung by the whole group present, and Lee Side was a pleasant mix of a live band, small more personal sea shanty groups under dim light, which felt very personal, and singing in bright happi (traditional Japanese straight-sleeved coat).

To top it all off, everyone saluted while echoing the words: “Go-kigen-yo!” This is what sailors chant to onlookers ashore as they set sail aboard the grand sailing ship Nippon Maru (now permanently berthed at Sakuragicho Yokohama). They yell from the tops of their voices while standing on the ship’s yardarms.

All in all, it was an unmissable performance, one that we heartily recommend!

今年は前方の座席で鑑賞させていただき、感激もまたひとしおでした。合唱団の皆様の繊細な音域を至近距離で体感し、その音色が波のように押し寄せてくるようでした。芸術性の高い技巧と構成力には今年も圧巻されるばかりでした。披露されたシー・シャンティには、「Sailing, Sailing、Sloop "John B"、Shenandoah、Swansea Town」などがありました。私たちがつい口ずさんでしまうのは、「What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor」でしょうか。

公演は2部構成で、それぞれの演出方法も印象的です。

第1部は「風上（Weather Side）」ですが、これは船が風にさらされる側。合唱団全員が一体となって歌い上げるシー・シャンティは、他に類を見ない迫力を放ちます 。

第2部は「風下（Lee Side）」で、風の当たらない穏やかな側。こちらでは、生演奏のバンドが登場し、少人数編成の親しみやすさを醸し出しながら、薄明かりの中で歌われるなど、ムードと温もりのある構成となっていました。さらに、明るい色彩の法被（はっぴ）を羽織られ、視覚的にも引き締まるシーンでもあり、今年も観客席との一体感を強く感じました。

そして最後には、観客側も全員で「ゴキゲンヨー！」と声をそろえて敬礼！これは、横浜の桜木町に係留されている帆船・日本丸の現役時代でも同様に、船乗りたちが、マストの上から見送りの人々に向けて体いっぱいに呼びかける海の挨拶でもあります。

毎年決して見逃すことはできない、弊社の推しである「帆船日本丸を愛する男声合唱団」様の素晴らしい公演でした！
